An intergovernmental agreement on mutual exemption of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports was signed on March 5 2012 by Foreign Minister Nikolai Mladenov and China's ambassador in Sofia, Guo Yezhou.

Mladenov and Yezhou emphasised that this step reflected the good level of Bulgarian-Chinese relations and would promote the further development of bilateral political and economic dialogue, a statement by the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said.

The agreement allows Bulgarian citizens with valid diplomatic or official passports to enter, leave and transit through the territory without a visa for China and to stay there for a period of 30 consecutive days for each entry, while the number of entries is unlimited within the calendar year.

Citizens of China holding valid diplomatic or official passports can enter, leave and transit through the territory of Bulgaria without visas and reside for up to 90 days every six months from the date of first entry in accordance with the requirements of European visa legislation.
