Bulgaria will not go ahead with the Belene nuclear power station plant, Bulgarian-language media reported Deputy Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov as saying on March 28 2012, ahead of official public clarification of the country’s position on Belene by Prime Minister Boiko Borissov.

After a scheduled meeting of Bulgaria’s Cabinet, Borissov went to see President Rossen Plevneliev and later was to brief Parliament’s economic policy, energy and tourism committee on the outcome of the Prime Minister’s conversation on March 26 with Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin.

The committee meeting was to be held behind closed doors, with a public statement by Borissov expected afterwards.

Bulgarian-language media said that instead of proceeding with Belene, Bulgaria would build a gas-powered electricity power station and would transfer a reactor ordered for Belene to the long-standing nuclear power station at Kozloduy.

Minister of Economy and Energy Delyan Dobrev will travel to Moscow to announce Bulgaria’s decision to Russian contractor Atomstroyexport, Goranov was reported to have said.
