Extinction need not be forever, at least in the case of the European bison.

Some 200 years after being driven from the wilds of Bohemia, a small herd of European bison, or wisents, were released April 10 into the Židlov Game Preserve at Ralsko - on the site of a former military base - about one hour's drive north of Prague in north Bohemia.

The herd's four females were transferred from Poland's Białowieża National Park, which boasts the largest European bison population in the world, last year. They are accompanied by one bull, also Polish, from Kampinos National Park.
