A 42-year-old man was arrested by police in the Bulgarian capital city Sofia after demanding 1000 leva (about 500 euro) ransom for a Husky he had stolen, the Interior Ministry said.

The man allegedly stole the dog while its owner, a 22-year-old woman, was taking it for a walk in the city.

Soon afterwards, the woman got a phone call demanding the ransom for the return of the dog.

The woman alerted police and the man was arrested while the ransom was being handed over. The Husky was reunited with its owner.

The man has been remanded in custody, pending trial on charges of extortion. According to Sofia police, the man had a police record for theft and rape and had a previous conviction for fraud.

Hope he gets locked up for a long time. Sadly I expect Sofia will be seeing more of this as the popularity of breed dogs increases. I have one and have to worry continuously.
