Environment minister Iskra Mihaylova fired the directors of all the 23 regional units in the ministry’s system in one day. The heads of the 16 regional inspectorates, the three national parks and the four river basin directorates received dismissal orders on Thursday.
The reason for the purge is the units’ poor performance on EU-funded projects, which has triggered financial corrections and delayed the drafting of management plans, the minister told the Bulgarian News Agency. In her words the ministry has received numerous complaints.
The sacked directors, however, said that the dismissal orders did not contain any clear motives for the decision. According to them some of the directors will be re-appointed if they "show loyalty to the new incumbents." There have always been purges when a new government takes office but they have been carried out in a more gradual and less demonstrative way, long-serving ministry officers said.
