88 GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FIRED FOR CORRUPTION IN BULGARIA IN 2007

A total of 88 state officials have been fired from state administration in the first half of 2007 over charges of corruption.

Another five have been temporarily suspended, 35 have been re-appointed, the prosecution has been informed of 81 corruption cases and two officials hyave been sentenced.

This according to data from the report on implementation of the Strategy on Transparent Governance and for Prevention and Counteracting Corruption for the period January 2007 June 2007, presented by the Interior Minister Roumen Petkov.

The Cabinet discussed the report and approved a programme for continuation of the strategy in the second half of 2007, a Bulgarian Government media office press release said.

According to Petkovs report, 140 of the tasks in the strategy have been completed, including legislation amendments and implementation of anti-corruption measures in public and business administration. Completed tasks aimed at prevention and counteraction of corruption among high-level officials, and transparent party funding among others.

Bulgarias National Revenue Agency would examine the political parties and judicial entities with non-profit activities which failed to submit their reports and revenue declarations on time. More than 250, or 70 per cent, of the registered parties still have not reported their assets for 2006, the press release said.
