ACCESS TO BULGARIAS FORMER CLASSIFIED DOSSIERS TEMPORARILY PREVENTED
10:01 Wed 18 Apr 2007

The classified archives of former State Security intelligence service will remain closed until they are delivered to the newly established dossier opening committee.

Interior Ministry stopped using and conceding files containing data for the period from September 9 1944 to July 16 1991, mediapool.bg reported.

Applications for access to the files for research or investigative purposes for that period will have to be presented to the committee.

People, who need certificates under the law for rehabilitation of repressed persons, also have to apply to the same insitution.

Access to the rest of the files will continue following current procedures.

The Dossier Opening Commission was founded in April 2007. Its aim is to reveal the information contained in secret archives of the former intelligence service. Files may contain information on officials, who allegedly co-operated with the service.

Currently the commission investigates the past of the nominees for members of the European Parliament and whether they collaborated with the Secret Services.
