On February 2, 500 leva was raised and more than 90 people cheered on a full day of American football at an event organised by Team Sofia American football club and the Bulgarian Society for Animal Protection and Preservation (BSAPP).
The game was held at Little Akademika Sports Complex in Sofia. Team Sofia, in black, consisting of 32 Bulgarians faced Sofia Strays, a team of American expats who live and work in Sofia. After trudging up and down the field through the mud, Sofia Strays beat Team Sofia 14:6. Larry Wilson and Ryan Gibson scored the Strays’ two touchdowns, with a two-point conversion from Tom Sadowski. Team Sofia’s touchdown came in the second half after a great pass from quarterback Christian Chan to wide receiver Niki Angelov.
Thanks to the generosity of the attending fans and the support and donation from the Marine Security Guard Detachment at the US embassy, 500 leva was raised for Team Sofia and the BSAPP. In addition, BSAPP raised about 200 leva through selling t-shirts and other items promoting their cause. Team Sofia and Sofia Strays agreed to schedule another game for a weekend in March, the exact date will be announced later.
