Bulgaria was trying to introduce measures in order to raise its birth rate, United Press International (UPI) reported.
To try dealing with the current demographic problems, the Labour and Social Policy Ministry plans to extend pregnancy leaves, during which mothers would receive 90 per cent of their salaries, UPI reported.
Mothers would also receive a full-paid leave for up to 12 months, the report said.
Families would receive child care aid. Until the child becomes two years old parents would get $102 monthly aid.
According to the report such regulations were going to be enforced on January 1 2007, the date when Bulgaria was expected to join the EU.
State funds allocated for birth rate raise measures were going to reach $19.2 million, head of the parliamentary social welfare committee Hasan Ademov said.
Statistical information shows that Bulgarias population decreased by 1.2 million people from 1990 to 2004. The countrys population was now 7.76 million people.
According to predictions the population could drop to seven million people in 2020 if measures were not taken to deal with the problem, UPI reported.
