Bulgaria’s Albena resort to attract more affluent consumers

Bulgarian resorts ranked at the bottom of the price lists of British tour operators, Krassimir Stanev, executive director of Albena Jsc, said at a news conference, Dnevnik daily reported. That is not, however, where Albena wants to be.

A large number of British tourists were put off by the higher prices at Albena seaside resort, and have opted for a holiday in Slunchev Bryag (Sunny Beach), Stanev said. Therefore, company executives expect that the number of UK visitors to Albena will drop by 10 to 15 per cent this summer, compared to the 2007 season. Belgian and Dutch tourists’ flow is likely to follow a similar trend.

Stanev expressed his hopes that German tourist, traditionally prevalent in Albena, will maintain their share. Germany has been suffering the effects of economic recession for several years now, which accounts for the withdrawal of German tourists from Bulgarian resorts. This, along with the systematic poor organisation, has turned Bulgaria into the destination-of-choice for low-income vacationers, Stanev commented. His ambition is to attract  more affluent tourists, Dnevnik wrote.

I think that everyone concerned with the European tourist industry needs to sit down and take note. There is no way that Bulgaria is going to attract any affluent tourists here as it has absolutely NOTHING to offer them. It has, and always will be, to ALL European countries, a cheap place to live. Therefore, one can deduce, and if you take the time to ask tourists why they are not coming back they will tell you. Bulgaria has become too expensive, too overcrowded, no facilities, TERRIBLE customer service, unsafe and of course, due to the overbuilding everywhere, it has become UGLY. Bulgaria in the British tourist industry is treated as a joke, a place where you don't recommend to tourists as they will hate you forever. Tourists come once and don't come back, they try it once because its NEW on the European circuit, see the crap that is going on, and don't come back. Stick to the cheap tacky beer swilling tourists if you are going to survive and unfortunately you'll have to put up with the rubbish that comes with them.

I agree with the above comment. Focus needs to be placed on quality and not just quantity. The over-development must stop! I was in Slanchev Bryag in 2006 and I will rather spend my euros in the rural villages where I don't have to see monstrous buildings at every corner. Please Bulgaria and realise that when the beauty has gone, it has gone. Please capitalise rather on rural, and in particular, eco-tourism. I am not even a Brit and I spend more money on rural/eco-tourism than what I would at Slanchev Bryag. I just hope that it isn't too late!

Bad news travel faster than ever on internet, on forums and on news wire. This summer will Bulgaria and all resorts pay for the lack of safety for turist in Sunny beach, corrupt cops failed to prevent the violence that had been in Sunny Beach last summer. For summer 2008 I traveticket from Stockholm Sweden to Thailadn vill cost Less than 6000 SEK for a two weeks stay plus hotel for 300 SEK a day. This is what a low end hotel will cost in Sunny Beach. So what place will you travel to, Thailand or Sunny Beach?
