BULGARIA'S CABINET TO ASK FOR TRAKIA HIGHWAY LOAN EXTENSION
09:00 Thu 08 Feb 2007

Bulgaria's government took a decision to ask for a prolongation of the contract with the European Investment Bank (EIB) concerning funding for part of Trakia highway.

The contract was signed in 2000 and is worth 100 million euro. Funds had to be utilised for the construction of the Orizovo-Stara Zagora and Karnobat-Bourgas West segments, mediapool.bg reported.

Cabinet said that the total cost of the project was 240 million euro and it had to be accomplished by the middle of 2006. The remaining 140 million euro are provided by the state budget.

The segment Orizovo-Stara Zagora is being constructed by a Bulgarian consortium and Karnobat-Bourgas West by a Turkish consortium.

A clause in the concession contract for the highway segment Kalotina-Bourgas said EIB could provide additional 100 million euro for the construction of the road from Sofia to Bourgas.

The governments decision from the end of January for the prolongation of the concession required the private operator to fund the construction of  the  Stara Zagora-Karnobat part of the highway after the concession becomes valid.
