Bulgarians expect radical changes - Alpha research
14:47 Thu 24 Apr 2008 - Rene Beekman

According to the findings of a research by Alpha research, published on April 24, Bulgarians are almost unanimous in demanding radical changes in the country's politics. Most of the interviewed pointed out several areas that required reforms.

The interior ministry was pointed out as in need of reform by 92 per cent of those interviewed, the country's healthcare system needs reform according to 89 per cent and the Judiciary according to 82 per cent of respondents. Bulgaria's social policy needed to be reformed according to 81 per cent of the population.

Almost two-third of the adult population said that radical changes were needed in politics and governmental priorities.

The research was undertaken among 1000 people in the period of April 18-20 2008.

While 92 per cent said that a reform of the interior ministry was urgently needed, 59 per cent said they did not expect that to happen within the mandate of the current ruling coalition.

I am pleasantly suprised at the results of a poll that is heavily in favor of radical change in Bulgaria. Unfortunately, such change takes time and effort by those people who want change. They must work-- by their voting-- for a government that is corruption free, transparent in its decision-making, and who will follow the will of the voters who elect them. An 80% to 95% voter turnout will provide the message to the officials that the PEOPLE demand change. The poll results tell me that the people of Bulgaria must be educated on what a democracy can be and the roles and responsibilities of the people. Yes, the people have a responsibility to keep their government honest and uncorrupt. In basic terms, the PEOPLE must VOTE to elect candidates that will REPRESENT them at all levels of government. The judicial system must set an example for truth and honesty in dealing with the law. They must uphold the laws of Bulgaria. The leaders of the government, President and Prime Minister, must do what is best for the PEOPLE of Bulgaria. Only with true representation of the will of the people as expressed by their voting in a fraud-free open election can the change occur. Thats the kind of government I want my grandchilren to have in Bulgaria. Jerry Kuhaida Sr. Governance Advisor, Iraq
