CSKA-Levski derby ends in stalemate
21:13 Sat 10 May 2008 - Alex Bivol

Levski Sofia were unable to spoil the celebrations of cross-town rivals CSKA, crowned Bulgarian football champions last month, with the "eternal derby" ending in a 1-1 stalemate at CSKA's Bulgarska Armia ground on May 10.

The hosts looked more dangerous from the start and had several chances in the first half, but found themselves trailing with two minutes left before half-time, when Nikolai Dimitrov's shot took a fortunate deflection from team-mate Enyo Krustovchev to beat CSKA goalkeeper Ivailo Petrov.

CSKA picked up where they left off after the break and equalised on the 56th minute, when Levski defender Zhivko Milanov fouled Emil Gurgorov in the penalty area, Velizar Dimitrov converting the spot kick.

Despite CSKA's efforts to grab a winner, the result remained unchanged at the final whistle, with the second-half marred by violence in the stands.

The match had to be halted briefly around the hour-mark when fans of the visiting team started ripping off the stadium's plastic chairs and throwing them at rival fans and the police. One policeman and a fan appeared to be injured in the fracas.

The game was the first in charge for Levski head coach Velislav Voutsov, who took over from Stanimir Stoilov, fired along with chief executive Nasko Sirakov by chairman Todor Batkov earlier this week.
