CYCLING SOFIA

On June 28, Bulgarian bicycle and parts producer Velomania, and tourism club Rila, held an event titled Streets for People, whose goal was to encourage Sofians to travel by bike. To illustrate the benefits, the company showcased that 60 cars took up 500 sq m, a bus seating 75 passengers took up 90 sq m, while 120 cyclists occupied about 250 sq m. The event was attended by Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin and Belgian ambassador Philippe Beke. The Foreign Ministry was the first institution in Bulgaria to buy bicycles for its staff, Kalfin said. 'We should follow the European cities' example, where not only are bicycle lanes available, but also municipal bikes, which anyone can use for free,' he said.
