European member states are highly interested in the selection of Bulgarias new Prosecutor-General and the way in which this democratic procedure will be carried out. The European Commission is also expected to follow the process, European Integration Minister Meglena Kouneva told Bulgarian National Radio. Kouneva said that Bulgaria would carry out the procedure in the proper manner and that the name of the person was not that important, as long as the selection was justified and lawful.
Bulgarian media report that the most likely successor of current Prosecutor-General Nikola Filchev is presidential advisor Boris Velchev. The selection procedure was initiated on January 11 during the first session of the Supreme Judicial Council for this year. Names of the candidates for the position will be announced during this weeks session.
The selection of a Prosecutor-General cannot be entirely divorced from political processes, National Movement Simeon II (NMSII) member Ognyan Gerdjikov said. Gerdjikov said the leaders of the three parties in the ruling coalition might have agreed upon the selection of one candidate, Novinar newspaper reported.
