FRENCH OPPOSITION DEMANDS ANSWERS ON COMPENSATION FOR BULGARIAN MEDICS' RELEASE
12:17 Fri 27 Jul 2007

The French socialist party demands to know what Libya received from France in return for the Bulgarian medics freedom.

The release of the medics was the main condition for the visit of president Nikolas Sarkozy to Libya on July 25 2007, French Le Monde reported.

During Sarkozys visit, France and Libya signed a memorandum for co-operation in the field of nuclear energy for civil purpose, under which a nuclear reactor for processing sea water will be built in Libya. Sarkozy said that he memorandum lacked any relation to the medics case.

The socialist Partys first secretary, Franois Hollande, said that he did not want to believe that France might have conceded nuclear technologies for civil purpose to Libya in return of the medics release.

Le Monde also quoted Hollande as saying that on July 31 2007 French national assembly would give a hearing to foreign minister Bernard Kouchner on the medics case.

If Kouchners answers failed to satisfy the socialist party, the party leaders will continue to insist on more transparency in the case.

The six Bulgarian medics were returned home on July 24 2007 after French first lady Cecilia Sarkozy and the European external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner visited Libya.
