Dnevnik newspaper discusses foreign reactions to Bulgarian reforms, related to the country's EU accession. By the end of the year, the ratification of Bulgaria’s EU accession treaty would likely be a fact, German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said. Talks over initiation of the process were being held with German chancellor Angela Merkel, Steinmeier said after a meeting with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin.
Germany is especially interested in the fight against corruption and organised crime in Bulgaria. Kalfin invited Steinmeier to examine the latest anti-crime measures undertaken. This was the first meeting of the two ministers. Steinmeier offered aid in the case of the five Bulgarian nurses imprisoned in Libya.
The legal system, crime rate and corruption are sectors that worry British politicians as well, British minister of state for Europe Douglas Alexander said. Britain supports Bulgaria’s on-time accession to the union and the accession treaty would be ratified in several weeks, Alexander said. Bulgaria is entering the most critical weeks of its pre-accession period and should continue working on reforms, Alexander said.
