Nearly 950 tons of gold were located in the Pernik region, according to scientist from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) Emil Minev.
Research in the area revealed the presence of significant gold deposit, Novinar newspaper reported.
Also on August 21 the Canadian mining and exploration company Martern said it was going to present the location of another gold deposit.
The Canadian company had interest in research work near Popintsi village in the Panagiurishte region. Some time ago residents of the village protested against the work of the company and Martern stopped its research activity there.
Minev said that the presence of gold deposits was going to change Bulgarias role once the country joined the EU. New technology, however, was going to be needed for the extraction of the gold resources in the Pernik region, Minev said.
A number of gold deposits have already been located in Bulgarias Chelopech, Han Kroum and Popintsi, Novinar reported.
