Hristo Grigorov head of Bulgarian Red Cross Organisation (BRC) asked for a public apology and explanation from Interior Minister Roumen Petkov for the way Grigorov was treated by the police in the last two years.

In February 2006 Grigorov was arrested and hand cuffed in front of TV cameras on charges of diverting foreign humanitarian aid deliveries to commercial purposes. He was released ten days later and an investigation was launched.

On January 17 2008, the Sofia branch of General-Prosecutor's Office issued a statement saying that the investigation against Grigorov was over for lack of evidence.

Grigorov, who in 2006 was described by Petkov as one of the serious criminals in Bulgaria, has always claimed he was innocent and a victim of conspiracy.

On January 31 Grigorov said that Petkov owed him an apology and probably his resignation. “What happened to me was either a conspiracy or a complete lack of competence within the investigative institutions since we had documents for every donation received by the BRC and it was not a problem for the authorities to see that there was no crime committed. The actions of the Interior Ministry harmed the image of BRC and the image of Bulgaria in a devastating way and someone should take the responsibility for that. No one can compensate me for the sleepless nights and the harassment I had to take for the past two years,” Grigorov said.

He had asked to see Petkov but he was told Petkov was abroad in the last few days. “If however he invites me to have lunch with him I would not mind, because I want to truth to be told” Grigorov said answering a question of The Sofia Echo.
