IF BULGARIAN TEACHERS DON'T ACCEPT PROPOSAL, THE NEXT OFFER MIGHT BE WORSE- TRADE UNIONS
13:50 Mon 29 Oct 2007

If Bulgarian teachers would reject the draft-agreement offered by the Cabinet on October 26 2007, the Cabinets offer may change for the worse, Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) head Zhelyazko Hristov said.

Hristov quoted Finance Minister Plamen Oresharski.

According to the unions, both the Cabinet and the unions had made concessions.

Zhivka Zhelyazkova, co-chair of the strike committee, said that the three unions started sending the draft-agreement to the regional structures as early as the evening of October 26 2007. Time was needed until every protesting teacher would approve the draft agreement, she said as quoted by 24 Chassa daily.

The opinion of the protesters would be summarised by noon on October 29. If the teachers agree with the draft-agreement, it would be signed the same day and the protesters may return to work on October 30.

Zhelyazkova said that many teachers disagreed with the salary increase in 2008. The draft-agreement envisions the average gross monthly wage of the teachers to reach 650 leva. Start salary for new teachers will be 450 leva.

Nikolai Nikolov, spokesperson of the strike committee told 24 Chassa that the strike committee might have to continue processing the results on October 30, thus delaying any signing the draft-agreement.

Even if the agreement was signed, the teachers would continue to be ready to continue the strike, to make sure that the Cabinet would keep its promises.

The teachers went on strike on September 24 2007, demanding 100 per cent increase in salaries by July 2008.
