Almost 6,000 cases of infectious diseases were registered at the Ministry of Health from July 8 to 14.
The week before there were 466 fewer cases. “The acute respiratory disease spread in the past period were 4,601 cases,” a press release by the ministry read. According to the information, the three-day period starting on July 13 marked 250 cases of enteritis colitis in the territory around Dupnitsa, Bobov Dol and Sapareva Banya. All of the infected showed similar symptoms of feeling dizzy, sick and having stomach pains. The highest number of infected were detected in the villages of Babinska Reka, Yahinovo, Mlamovo and the town of Dupnitsa.
Enteritis colitis is an inflammation of the intestinal tract, especially of the small intestine (enteritis) and the large intestine (colitis). It causes disturbances of the stomach tract and very often results in dehydration due to lack of fluids and the constant waste of water from the organism. It is usually cured after a 5-day period consisting of a diet of tea, toast, rice water and the consumption of fluids.
The information released led the Directorate of Epidemiology and Hygiene in Kyustendil to order a complete cleaning procedure for the water pipe system in the region. Microbiological tests have been taken from the dam and the usage of the water will be renewed after it is proven that it is of drinking quality.
In connection to the way the disease is transferred, the Institute of Epidemiology and Hygiene of Sofia advised better hygiene and washing of all fruits and vegetables. The prevention of the spread of the disease depends mostly on hand-washing habits. Doctors also advised food to be preserved in very cold places and away from direct sunlight for prevention of so called summer infections.
The cases of salmonella for the past week were 55 and the virus hepatitis – 71. The number of cases of enteritis colitis was 447 for the entire 10-day period.
The gastro-enteric diseases in the region of Plovdiv have increased dramatically in the past week but there is no sign of an epidemic, said Ani Eginlian, head of the epidemiological department at the Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute in Plovdiv.
According to Eginlian, the boom of infectious diseases is due to a lack of personal hygiene habits during the hot summer days. “The consumption of rotten foods causes some of the most serious problems in summer,” she said.
