ISLAND NEAR BULGARIA'S SOZOPOL TO BECOME TOURISM CENTRE
12:38 Fri 27 Apr 2007

Bulgarian government decided to grant the Regional Development and Public Works Ministry the management of St St Kirik and Iulita island near the coastal resort of Sozopol.

The island is under state ownership and is connected to the old part of Sozopol. Its total area amounts to 82,589 000 sq m.

St St Kirik and Iulita is part of Sozopol preserve and was named a cultural monument in 1965.

A Bulgarian army division was based on the island until 2005.

The statute of the island requires preservation of its historic and architecture inheritance from the ancient period, medieval ages and the Bulgarian revival. Together with its favourable location, the resort has potential to become an attractive centre for local and international tourism.

Regional Development Ministry will take the needed measures for examining and preparing the zoning plan of the property within one month.
