The oil spill in the Kerch Straight could well reach Bulgarian territorial waters in two weeks, representatives of Varna's Institute of Oceanology warned earlier this week.
Although the threat was for the time being purely theoretical, it was not to be underestimated, Dnevnik daily said.
The wind changed its direction and for 3 days it has been pushing the spills to the open sea and from there to Bulgaria.
Unless changes in weather conditions occurred, the oil spill, although less dense, could reach Bulgaria's Kaliakra Cape within days, scientists said.
Biodiversity in the region would be threatened, representatives of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds said as quoted by Dnevnik daily. Until the present moment the eco catastrophe killed over 30 000 birds, tens of thousands more being covered with oil slick and were sure to die. The disaster may have fatal consequences on migrating Bulgarian bird populations, since the second biggest bird migration route in Europe, Via Pontica, passes over Bulgaria.
On November 11, a powerful storm sunk several cargo ships and split an oil tanker in two, causing a oil spills in the Kerch Straight between the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
