Bulgaria might not benefit from European funds due to the lack of quality projects and administrative capacity to direct the process. These problems were listed during a Sunday press conference organised by President Georgi Purvanov for representatives of business organisations, unions and administrators. The second annual economic report created for the President by experts from the Bulgarian National Bank was presented at the conference, Dnevnik newspaper reported.
In the attempt to catch up with European standards, differences between developed and underdeveloped Bulgarian regions will deepen. Negative effects on the poorly developed regions will last much longer than expected, the report warns. Business representatives requested a thorough analysis of problems European member states initially faced with using EU funds. Experts could not reach an agreement whether underdeveloped regions should receive more European finance. A final conclusion of the session was that even if the Bulgarian economy made full use of European funds, it would not be competitive without domestic unified policies.
