Nato will not extend Macedonia an invitation for Nato membership, the alliance's secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer confirmed at an April 3 news conference on the sidelines of the Nato summit in Bucharest, Reuters news agency reported.
"We duly recognise the work and efforts of Macedonia on its road to Nato accession," Scheffer said, quoting the declaration of the 26-member alliance on the eastward expansion. "The UN employed much effort to resolve the name dispute, however, unfortunately it was never solved. We agreed that Macedonia would get an invitation on a mutually acceptable resolution of the argument."
On hearing the news all Macedonian journalists demonstratively exited the news conference hall. Shortly thereafter, the Macedonian foreign minister announced the early departure of his country's official delegation.
"This is a huge disappointment,"the spokesperson of the Macedonian delegation Nikola Dimitrov said, as quoted by Reuters. "They told us we did all necessary in terms of reforms and our military input. We have been punished for being Macedonians."
Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said Bulgaria regretted that Macedonia's application was turned down.
Political analysts forecast that Macedonia faces an uncertain future over losing its prospect to shortly join the North Atlantic alliance and the EU. Macedonia is also on the brink of a political crisis. Its fragile governmental coalition relied on positive outcome in Bucharest to regain some much-needed stability.

On October 8, 1912, the First Balkan War began. Montenegro, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece attacked the European positions of the Ottoman Empire. Macedonians also took active part and contributed in driving the Turks out of Macedonia. Turkey capitulated soon, but Macedonia did not free itself. The victorious Balkan kingdoms convened in Bucharest in August 1913 to divide the spoils. The partition of Macedonia is best illustrated with the following maps:
Greece was awarded Aegean Macedonia and renamed it to "Northern Greece"; Bulgaria annexed Pirin Macedonia and abolished the Macedonian name, and Serbia took over Vardar Macedonia and renamed it to "Southern Serbia". The same year, N. Pasich of Serbia and E. Venizelos of Greece agreed on the newly formed Greek-Serbian (later Yugoslavian) border, so that there would be "only Serbs to the North and only Greeks to the South", and no "Macedonians" on either side.
The CIA Ethnic Map of Balkans and Macedonia is yet another proof that the ethnic Macedonians today represent a big national minority in northern Greece or Aegean Macedonia. According to this CIA source, the Macedonians live in all parts of Macedonia: Vardar (todays Republic of Macedonia), Pirin Macedonia in Bulgaria, and Aegean Macedonia in Greece.

| The Greek issue with the name is silly, and the whole world can see that- that is clearly not why Macedonia didn't get accession, but because of poor diplomacy and poor politics, failing to be cunning and act wisely at the right time... Why did Macedonia have to rename the airport after all these years? Why not named it after some other hero? Why are those statues placed in front of the government? Why 3 days before the summit there is a billboard featuring the greek flag and a swastika? Why did mr.Gruevski decide to kiss an ethnic map just before the summit? Well- it is clear: this government wants this country to drown in its isolation and regress, all qualified individuals will move get other citizenship, and most likely Bulgarian, since they are so nice to give out Bulgarian passports to Macedonians so easily... VMRO wants Macedonia to be Bulgaria... it is as clear as daylight. | |
