MAGISTRATES IN BULGARIA CALL FOR HIGHER WAGES
09:51 Thu 09 Nov 2006

Member of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) Veneta Markovska suggested an increase in the wages of magistrates.

Wages in the sphere have not been updated, said she as quoted by Novinar newspaper.

Deputy prosecutor-general Hristo Manchev said that magistrates in Bulgaria had to cope with heavy workload since the beginning of the year because of EU accession requirements.

SJC member Andrei Ikonomov said that since the wages of MPs could become higher, the wages of magistrates could also increase. In both cases the payments were calculated using the average monthly income levels.

In addition, Bulgarias justice sector needed more employees, Markovska said. At least 260 people had to start work in administrative courtrooms in the country from March 1 2007, Novinar reported.

Magistrates met on November 8 in Veliko Turnovo to discuss justice sector transformations in Bulgaria, Novinar said.
