MARTIN PETROV BECOMES BULGARIA'S FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR

Hours before the footballer of the year award ceremony took place, the Bulgarian Football Union reported on its website that Martin Petrov was to receive the award.

Petrov received more votes than Stiliyan Petrov and Dimitar Berbatov, BGNES Sport agency reported.

During the award ceremony, the winner is to receive a cup and a jeep. Awards will be given starting 8.30pm on December 19.

The ceremony was carried out for the first time in 1961. Georgi Naydenov became Bulgarias first footballer of the year.

Former football player and coach Hristo Stoichkov is the winner of most such awards. Berbatov has received three so far.

Awards are given based on the preliminary vote of 161 journalists from 61 media, BGNES reported.
