ALL prospecting and ore-mining companies, companies quarrying and processing stone facing material or extracting industrial raw materials, companies engaged in research, engineering and mining construction have been either privatised or closed.

Half of coal mining enterprises have been privatised, and 25 per cent have been closed down or were being liquidated, Luchezar Tsotsorkov, President of the Bulgarian Mining Chamber (BMC) said last Friday.

The BMC organised the solemn marking of the Day of Bulgarian Miners, August 18. Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister Nikolai Vassilev attended the event.

The BMC proposes to amend the Subsoil Resources Act for the purpose of simplifying the procedure for concession granting. It is suggested to set up an Agency for Subsoil Resource on the basis of the concession departments at the different ministries which would manage the reasonable extraction of subsoil resources and would grant concessions for their mining.

Vassilev said the Government was to discuss a bill amending the Subsoil Resources Act at its regular meeting on August 22.
