MPS DISCUSS POLITICAL IMMUNITY AND CONSTITUTION CHANGES IN BULGARIA
13:57 Thu 02 Mar 2006

Members of Parliament are discussing Constitution changes related to political immunity.

Opposition parties Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) and Ataka movement demand the complete immunity removal. DSB member Neno Dimov said it is illogical for MPs to draft laws and at the same time to hide from court proceedings.

Removal of the immunity will increase trust in the National Assembly and will motivate MPs to work more efficiently, Dimov said.

The immunity is given for equality among administrators, Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) member Tatiana Doncheva said. She said the complete removal the political immunity would have unwanted consequences, Focus news agency reported.

DSB member Ekatierina Mihailova said the ruling coalition is implementing minor changes rather than reforms by keeping the political immunity.

Political immunity is not a privilege, BSP member Mihail Milkov said. He said if members of parliament cannot enjoy immunity the same should apply for magistrates and diplomats.
