Spotchecks in nightclubs on underage revellers will be just one of the functions of the new Consultancy Council for Children in Sofia (CCCS). The organisation will also set up resource centres for homeless children. In addition, gifted youngsters as well as their parents will receive extra financial support, Bulgarian language daily Zagrada.bg reported on April 28.
One of the ideas discussed at a preliminary meeting for establishing the CCCS is that the local Commission to combat anti-social deeds of underage citizens, the municipal security company Egida and representatives of Sofia’s police directorate should undertake checks of bars, discos and night clubs.
CCCS will be formed on May 12. Its members will be composed of staff from the following organisations: the municipality, the regional education inspectorate, the Agency for social support, the Child Pedagogical Department of Sofia police directorate, the State Agency for Youth and Sport and 18 non-governmental organisations. Sofia’s deputy mayor in charge of education, Yordanka Fundukova, and the deputy mayor in charge of social activities, Albena Atanasova, will be nominated as CCCS’s chairpersons.
Violate Alandjiiska, a representative of the children’s pedagogical section said that the presence of teenagers between 16 and 18 years old in night clubs, bars and discos is not technically restricted even though a municipal regulation bans it. She said that this regulatory contradiction must be clarified.
Another goal of CCCS will be to protect homeless children. Special day resource centres will be opened with funding stemming from the municipal budget as well as wider support.
CCCS will also develop a long-term programme for children. The programme will also look after gifted children, supporting them and their parents financially, BTA news agency reported.
