Bulgaria's Parliament passed on February 8 2008 a bill of amendments to the country's Roads Act, which will institute toll fees for the roads that are part of EU's trans-European road network, investor.bg reported.
The toll fees will not replace vignettes, the stickers that motorists must buy as a form of road use tax, and will have to be paid on top of the vignettes, according to the amendments bill.
The changes will apply to all vehicles, with the sole exception of heavy cargo trucks weighing up to 3.5 tonnes, which will be exempted from paying toll fees.
Another amendment will introduce harsher penalties for drivers caught without vignettes, raising the fine stipulated by law and banning the cars from circulation. The lawmakers also decided to introduce the one-day vignette, which will cost 11 euro.
Parliament passed the bill of amendments at the first reading, meaning it can undergo more changes before being voted into law.
