Serbian president Boris Tadic received on May 5 a death threat in a letter that labeled him a traitor that deserves “a bullet in the forehead”, Serbian newspaper Blic reported the same day.

Serbian broadcaster B92 quoted Serbian Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic as saying that such a serious threat would be tackled both by the prosecutor’s office and the security services. The prosecutor’s office said it had already launched an investigation into the threat.

The presidential office neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

Serbia’s pro-Western president has earned the wrath of pro-Russian hardliners over his nod to the Stabilisation and Association Agreement Serbia signed with the European Union last week. They insisted that the agreement be traded only for return of Kosovo to its fold. Kosovo unilaterally declared independence in February.

Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica joined the camp of hardliners saying that the EU agreement was not in Serbia’s interest.
