SHIELDS APPEAL DECISION EXPECTED SOON IN BULGARIA
09:00 Wed 22 Mar 2006

BBC reports Michael Shields, sentenced to 15 years in prison for a premeditated murder attempt in Bulgaria, expects a final decision on his verdict soon.

The Supreme Court of Cassation will hold a session on Tuesday. Shield’s attorneys requested re-examination of previous proceedings due to the procedural violations that occurred.

Shields was detained and found guilty of attempting to kill Bulgarian bartender Martin Georgiev. Shields was visiting Bulgaria’s Sunny Beach resort together with a group of Liverpool fans, who attended a match in Turkey.

Another member of the group, Graham Sankey confessed from Britain he committed the crime. He refused to appear before Bulgarian court and his written confession was not counted as evidence establishing Shields’ innocence.

A first appeal in November failed to decrease Shields’ sentence.

Shields’ father, who is currently in Bulgaria said he hopes the court will order a re-trial in the coming days. The British fan already spent 10 months in Bulgarian prison, the BBC reported.

During the hearing Shields maintained he was innocent, as he was in his room at the time of the accident.

The Supreme Court of Cassation has a maximum of 30 days in which it can order new court proceedings.

Stavros you are clearly prejudice and label people. Anyone with any intelligence can see that there is no concrete evidence towards Michael. Maybe you should study law and then comment.
