TO THE EDITOR: On the Macedonia name issue
16:00 Fri 11 Apr 2008

The Greek issue with the name is silly, and the whole world can see that.
It is clearly not why Macedonia didn’t get accession, but because of poor diplomacy and poor politics, failing to be cunning and act wisely at the right time... Why did Macedonia have to rename the airport after all these years? Why not name it after some other hero?
Why are those statues placed in front of the government? Why three days before the (Nato) summit was there a billboard featuring the Greek flag and a swastika? Why did Mr Gruevski decide to kiss an ethnic map just before the summit? It is clear that this government wants this country to drown in its isolation and regress, all qualified individuals will move to get other citizenship, and most likely Bulgarian, since they are so nice to give out Bulgarian passports to Macedonians so easily... VMRO wants Macedonia to be Bulgaria... It is as clear as daylight.

Makedonka

It’s only the fault of the Greeks and the Macedonians that they can’t come to an agreement between themselves. The ex-Yugos should stop blaming the rest of the world for troubles of their own making.

Mat

The whole idea of expanding Nato in the Balkans is not to enrich the politicians of Skopje, but to create peace and stability in a troubled region.

It therefore makes no sense for an applicant wishing to join a club to dictate the terms of its admission and to create tension and problems for established members. This isn’t a dispute over a name (the great Slavs arrived in the fifth century CE, so even a schoolboy would laugh at Skopje’s claims to Macedonia’s ancient heritage), rather, it’s an attempt by a country without a past (Skopje is the remnant of Tito’s fragmented republic) to create an artificial history. But does Skopje really think that it can achieve its goals by irritating its neighbour Greece by naming its airport “Alexander the Great”, placing the White Tower of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, on its banknotes and promoting the idea that Greek premier Constantin Karamanlis, himself a Macedonian, is a Nazi?

Skopje should instead focus on improving the lot of its poor. Coming from someone who has visited hospitals there, they make the health services of many African nations look good.

Skopje should call itself the Federated Republic of the Central Balkans, accept the rights of all its minorities (Serbs, Bulgarians, Albanians, Greeks, Turks, Roma) and work hard to eliminate corruption, create jobs and improve its health care and pensions.

Wasting time on a fight with Greece it cannot win is only achieving one thing, the further impoverishment of the Skopje people. And as for the Skopje loyalists in the United States and Australia who have long-claimed that being Slav doesn’t disqualify them from having the DNA of the ancient Macedonians (which school of logic did they attend?), it’s about time they put their money to work where it will achieve the best results, namely creating jobs for the peoples of Skopje. To claim that no one has the right to dictate their constitutional name is ignoring the key fact that Skopje’s textbooks voice territorial ambitions over northern Greece.

Even with the best will in the world, even the Greek Communist Party can’t accept such blatant aggression. The Greek civil war saw Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria provide material and other support to the Greek communist rebels. Today, however, Greece lives in peace and co-operation with all these countries except Skopje. And which country is the poorest and with the worst potential? Skopje. Conclusion: call yourself whatever you want, but beware that according to the laws of physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. I look forward to the day when Greeks can sit down with the leaders of the dynamic Federative Republic of the Central Balkans (Skopje) to sip ouzo and drink to the health of a new nation at peace with itself and its peoples.

Professor Francis Wilson

Profesor Francis Wilson I am disapointed with your comments on the Macedonian question. The way you Sir write is one sided and it is not historicly correct. You are repeating what the Big Powers did in 1913 Bucharest. Please do not connect Macedonia to the comunists. Republic of bMacedonia is right to call itself just that. Greeces objection is mainly to suppress the Macedonian people and take away their basic Human Rights.

Anybody who trusts a word coming out of a Bulgarian or Greeks mouth should have their head examined. Of the 130 or so political parties existing in Bulgaria, Macedonians still do not have a party. The reason for such a snub is that Bulgarians, like Greeks, have some unjustified fear that there will a Kosovo like uprising to take back land that was stolen 95 years ago. It is interesting that Macedonia has never made an attempt to take land back or start any conflict over the pilfering of land. Further, the Bulgarian government; which is by the way one of the, if not the, most corrupt government in all of Eastern Europe. As for Greece (bastardized post WW1 name) they should be more embarrassed than anyone. A country that does not recognize one ethnic minority in its country is not a democracy. Further, Greece, a Communist country when they joined NATO as a western satellite state, still holds vestages of good old communism to this day. Providing for Chrisitianity as a religion of the state. This sort of proclomation is no different than declaring that there is no religion for the state. As much as Bulgaria and Greece try to deny the ethnic Macedonian populations in their countries, it will be impossible to do such a thing. There is no substitute for truth! Something that these to overly proud and prejudiced nations will find out.

Why don’t just let Macedonia be. Leave it alone. Stop observing them under a loop and follow what they do and say, what they put in their books, in their parks, who they think they’re decedents of. If Macedonian’s claim to be descendants of Ancient Macedonian is laughable, then the Greek claim to be descendants of Ancient Greece is also laughable. 5000 years have passed give me a break. So stop acting like a GESTAPO and let Macedonians be. Accept the fact that you didn’t manage to eat all of Macedonia, you didn’t manage to kick out or assimilate all the people there. Accept the fact that you left a little piece uneaten. Let the people of that little peace be. And stop acting as if they have to ask you for permission to exist. Stop acting as if they have to ask you for a permission what to think, how to look at themselves in the mirror, how to understand their past and what happen to them. Let them find it out. And if you don’t like it, so what. Identity is subjective, history is subjective, self awareness is subjective, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Just leave the Macedonians alone. Let the breathe for a second.

Well, I'm disapointed about profesor's coment, who claim that Macedonia was Tito's product and he express only nationalistic ideas of Greece, forgeting the true story. If the Macedonia was Greek property, why they not choose this name when they become independent from Turks and why they not liberated first this part, which they claim now was Greece? Conclusion is: they start with this propaganda "Macedonia is Greece" after separation of Macedonia in Bucharest 1913, in order to hide from world their Nazi ocupation. Why Greece till now didn't accept returning of the refugees from Civil War who declared themselves as Macedonians, to return back their land in conquired part of Macedonia? Why they don't put name "Macedonia" before 90-ties, before Macedonia become independant from Yugoslavia? Let profesor answered these questions!

I highly doubt that this comment came from a Professor "Francis Wilson"... Professor Yanni Grkomaki...maybe. Before you go on with that misleading information, please consider this document and see why the Macedonians from Macedonia deny Greek propaganda. http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pasoksh8.jpg I will translate it in English: Translation: HELLENIC REPUBLIC Top secret MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SECURITY NATIONAL SECURITY SERVICE Athens, 16 February 1982 ……….. Number of protocol 6502/7-3042…. (…..) INTRODUCTIONS a. The Skopians' activities for the autonomy of Macedonia may be efficiently confronted mainly by wiping out the use of the idiom, in the regions near the borders. This opinion is based on the realizations that also other regions that in older times were the center of "Macedonism", like Kastoria, are not hit by the Skopian propaganda, because there the use of the idiom has been almost wiped out. b. This element by itself would be enough to exclude any thoughts of repatriation of the P/R (political refugees) who now reside in Yugoslavia and who have been brought up with the "Macedonian idea", the "Macedonian language and culture", independently of their participation or not to the organizations SNOF, NOF and activities taken for detaching Greek territories, during the period 1946-1949. c. As for the above it is imperative to: 1. The creation of a state institution that will depend from the Prefectures of the regions near the borders, lined with the suitable and specially trained to the "Plot against Macedonia" subject, personnel. This institution will engage itself only with this subject, with the supervision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will collaborate closely, but in secret, with the Security Authorities and all the public services (Tax office, Schools, Army, Church, etc.). 2. In the public services and especially in the educational institutions the employees who will be in service have to be ignorant of the local idiom. 3. The establishment of special enlightenment seminaries, for all the public service employees and the clergy who are in service in the sensitive region of Macedonia. 4. The establishment of motivations for the obligatory residence of the public servants and other employees, in the quarters of their service (example: payment of the rent, extra pay, etc.). 5. Establishment of Cultural Association, like "ARISTOTELIS" in Florina and economic help to them, for the realization of events and the publishing of books, newspapers, magazines, etc. and afterwards these will be sent to the Diaspora abroad who has origins from the regions of the senders. This will boost their national sentiment and they will be protected from the anti-Hellenic propaganda that is been practiced by S/M (Slavmacedonians) organizations. 6. Insertion of various obstacles (non-recognition of diplomas, postponement of military service, etc.) for the Greek students who wish to study in Skopje. 7. Marking in each village of persons who, due to their kin bounds and their personality, influence a large circle of co-villagers and with any means (even with money payments) get close to them and use them properly so they will behave as the fighters of the use of the idiom in their circle. To this direction a very positive and effective role can be that of the Youngers of the political parties, by the judgment and coordination of the Government, when a between parties agreement will be reached. 8. Recruitment in the Armed Forces, in Police Bodies, in the public services and Organisms of employees with origins from Florina region, by exception, and their obligatory location in other areas of the Country. 9. The encouragement, by the leadership of the Army, of meetings and marriages of Army officers, who are on duty there and have origins abroad, with women that speak the idiom. (…) THE CHIEF DIMITRIS KAPELARIS ANT/GOS This strategy was drawn out for one reason; wiping out anything with the "word" Macedonia... or as they refer to it; wiping out the idiom.

"“European strategy towards the Balkans is in deep trouble at a critical and dangerous moment.” The real message of what happened in Bucharest (where Greece blocked Macedonia's bid), says Mr Bender, is that NATO and EU integration is not based on objective criteria and that “every promise can be broken”. GREEK NATIONALISTS are not the only problem..." This is how the Economist (there are many others of course) see what is going on...

Obviously Francis Wilson is uninformed about a number of things especially about the various economies in the Balkans. This sort of off hand approach by the professor serves no purpose but to show how uninformed the supposedly informed are. What person in the Balkans does not want a better life and certainly if there is to be a better life it will be through Europe. However, without justice, especially in the Balkans, there can never be peace...too bad that common sense isn't so common.

Professor Francis Wilson, The Republic of Macedonia is a country without history? Let's talk about the real issue. The manufactured history (by "Professors" such as yourself) of another country -- Greece. Let me quote. Demosthenes speaking about Philip 2: "... not only no Greek, nor related to the Greeks, but not even a barbarian from any place that can be named with honors, but a pestilent knave from Macedonia, whence it was never yet possible to buy a decent slave." Third Philippic, 31 Phillip II of Macedon invaded and conquered the then divide city-states of Hellas. Thus, the end of Ancient Hellenic history and the dawn of Macedonian rule. I find it ironic that Hellas now idolises these foreign leaders and the history they created. They were their enemies! Rightly so, they were not idolised by Greek people of the country that formed in 1827 after several millennia of foreign rule. This was the case until it became an issue when Greece stole the largest part of Macedonia in the Treaty of Bucharest in 1912/1913. As much as Greece denies it, genocide of the Macedonias in Aegean Macedonia followed. Greece RENAMED Northern Greece to Macedonia in 1988. Now, they claim the name was always part of their history. I remain steadfast and I hope Macedonians all around the world will. We are Macedonians and will remain always. Since you brought up the DNA card, you may want to read the following paper: Title: HLA genes in Macedonians and the sub-Saharan origin of the Greeks Journal: Tissue Antigens Volume 57 Issue 2 Page 118-127, February 2001 I have included the key findings published in the abstract since I am not confident that a Professor of your stature would be able to successfully retrieve this article: Macedonians belong to the ‘‘older’’ Mediterranean substratum, like Iberians (including Basques), North Africans, Italians, French, Cretans, Jews, Lebanese, Turks (Anatolians), Armenians and Iranians, 2) Macedonians are not related with geographically close Greeks, who do not belong to the ‘‘older’’ Mediterranenan substratum, 3) Greeks are found to have a substantial relatedness to sub-Saharan (Ethiopian) people, which separate them from other Mediterranean groups. Since you are so confident about the Slavic origins and Slavic language, try and Google 'Govrlevo" and click on the first link. You will find that there is significant evidence that inscriptions written "right to left" in Ancient Macedonia are related to those of Modern Macedonia. Not only are the letters related but also the words they spell out.

Profesor Francis Wilson you must be paid by the Greek media to be so biased on the Balkan history, or perhaps you dont know the Balkan history. A fellow Greek By the name Kostas said Goce Delcev was Bulgarian. Goce Delcev was born in Kukush 35 km. north of Solun "Salonica"Which is in the Greek part . Your comments are similar to his. As a profesor you should use better jugement on history.Republic of Macedonia will survive your biased commentary, because we know our history.

I commend 'Professor Francis Wilson's' fake name...how creative...you are obviously a greek with a narrow mind and a racist attitude. You forget to mention that the Macedonian are their own ethnic group, with their own language, culture and history. The Republic of Macedonia is an ethnically mixed country. However, so is every other Balkan country...The only difference is that Greece fails to recognise its Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish, Vlach and Roma minorities... so before you comment on minority issues in another country...perhaps you and your fellow Greeks should look at your home situation first

Dear Professor Wilson, do you like to loose your identity? Do you yhink we can sell ourselfs just because Greece said so? Are you uot of your mind. Our forfathers fought for their Macedonian name, do you understand that?Greeces only reason not to recognise Macedonia is prinvipaly to destroy the Macedonians in Greece. Have you ever visited "Northern Greece" and have you ever talked to the natives of that region? Professor Wilson your comments are biased and againts the Macedonian people. You must be paid hensomly by the Greek government. This is my strong oppinion Sir.A professor should investigate the truth before he comments on peoples history.Have you any idea what the Greek Government is doing to the Macedonian minority today? Greece has brocken all Human Rights for their minorities. Have you not hear about the Stratsburg Courts from the Macedonian and Turkish Minorities. Please do your home work before you piss me off any more. I am Macedonian and will live proudly as Macedonian. My life when I was in Greece was a hell. Greek solgiers beating on defensles women. I have witnessed this and can prove it.

GreecesHuman Rights violations by Steve Gligorov. Esq. On Oct.20-2005 final rulingin the case of Uranio Toxo and others v. Greece. Application Number 7498/01 that the court unanimously held that Greece violated Article 11 and 6 of the European Convention because Greece denied Greek citizens of Macedonian national origin, who are a minority in Greece, the right to freedom of assembly, freedom of association, and equal protection of Laws.Member of the 'EFA' {Europian Free Alliance} Rainbow Political Party of the Macedonian minptity in Geece" brought suit againts Greece alleging government sponsored discrimination based on national origin, ethnicity, and religious discriminations.Nearly three years later Greece has not taken any affirmative steps to address and abide by the Court decision. Only nationalists from FYROM has written comments on this one. Prof. I totally agree with you! As long as these citizens of FYROM denies their past, try to rewrite history and make claims on greek, bulgarian and albanian territory they do not deserve a place in the EU or NATO.

Its understandable that there is a frustration in Skopje (F.Y.R.O.M) and thats why they try to make Greece look bad. But facts remains and as professor Wilson pointed out the rulers of the new state should stop their silly hatecampaign on Greece to hide the real domestic problems they have. Its logic that a new state seeks an identity but trying to falsify history will not solve the problems - You cant live happy when your lives are based on lies because the truth will always be there and remind you.

If you really want to go back to pre WW1 names, your tiny landlocked insignificant country was called varder banovina. You are bulgarians who due to the great powers were left out of your countrys borders hence the formation of IMRO. Go look @ and web site ie the american department of foreign affairs, the BBC * so on & your history starts from the late 1880's. Lets not kid our selves the name, history & legacy of ancient mecedonia is & has always been hellenic. Alexander the great has nothing to do with your slav citizens. The hellenic history of mecedonia is not for sale. your people are related to the goste delchevs, hristo tatarchev, dame greev, petar pop-arsov, andon dimitrov, hristo batandzhiev, & so on. these people are bulgarians from the region of mecedonia. Also greece was never a communist country prior to joining nato. Your language was altered & changed in the 1940's & church formed in 1967. Also for the bulgarians who were kicked out of greece over the last 150, it was you bulgarians who forcibly tried to make the population swear alliance to bulgaria & it did not work. Even my grand parents who were slav speaking & all the slav speaking greeks had a greek conscience. Your bulgarian patriots in the 1880's started this war of attrition & tried to by force convert all the macedonians to your idealism of pan-slavism & the people whether greek or slavic speaking rejected this bulgarism & rebelled. your people went from village to village beating up people, looting homes & creating destruction. If they had left peacefully or intergrated somehow none of these problems would have existed today. Greece, turkey & bulgaria had an exchange of populations after the balkans wars. During the second world war the slavs created descruction in greece so when the advancing greek army finally started winning the war these war criminals finally fled. Us greeks have spilt blood for our ancestoral lands & no one is going to dictate terms to us, neither our history nor our future. The fact is you people are bulgarians who came from the mecedonian region. you are the same as the Bosnians, no history ! We are trying to compromise with you fools & northern Macedonia is more than fair. The history is not yours & this chris stefou is a joke. Is he a scholar or a clown. the northern part of greece has always been called mecedonia, your part was called VARDAR BANOVINA.
