The site of the future nuclear power plant at Belene on the Danube River has become overgrown with weeds in the decades since construction was put on hold. That is set to change now, after the Regional Development and Public Works Ministry issued a construction permit for the site earlier in July. The ministry, rather than local authorities, issued the permit because the power plant is a project of strategic importance and because the site covers ground in two municipalities.
