Some of the Government politicians who went to Bansko on the weekend of May 10 and 11 to come up with new social, health and law enforcement policies for Bulgaria may have the opportunity to return to the resort at length in winter 2009, because they may be out of a job. The proposals that emerged, especially on the social policy front, have an air of electioneering about them. In the current atmosphere, with the political stunts being performed by both Government and opposition, it is clear that the first steps in the long haul to the next parliamentary election are being taken. read more

Recent elections in Serbia that saw a surprise upset in favorr of pro-American candidate Boris Tadic are a great event for Serbia as well as neighbouring nations such as Bosnia and Croatia. Tadic defeated his rival and ultra-nationalist candidate Nikolic who is a surrogate for indicted United Nations war criminal Vojislav Seselj, who has retained a political following even as he sits in a Hague jail on charges of genocide in Bosnia and Croatia. read more
