Bulgarian Medics Solidarity Project, an NGO formed in the UK, called for the mobilisation of EU citizens in support of the five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for intentional HIV infection in Libya.

Focus news agency quoted a statement of the orgaisation as saying that while Bulgarians celebrated their EU entry, they were also concerned about the fate of the nurses.

The international tragedy and unjust verdict called for the intervention of the international community, the statement said.

The Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor sentenced on the same charges were intentionally held hostage by Libyan authorities for eight years already.

It was time for Europeans to ask from their political leaders to get involved in the trial, the statement said.

All Bulgarians and European citizens needed to exercise their democratic rights and meet their officials to request involvement in the trial.

Media should also continue their involvement in the case, the statement said. Everyone aware of the facts needed to contact local media and provide information in order to popularise the case, the statement said.
