The Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate (RIEW) in Sofia has issued two fines on two separate accounts to Reality Products EOOD for "systematically contaminating the waters of Iskar River" near the Sofia borough of Vrazdebna near the Kremikovtsi steel plant.
The second fine has been issued "for breach of contract and failure to provide logistical and infrastructural access to the local purification plant, to facilitate waste disposal, the failure of which has contributed to the pollution of the region," the inspection report states, as quoted by Investor.bg
During the survey conducted by Sofia-based experts, it was revealed that water contamination stemmed from production at the factory which deals in plastic recycling. The mill itself belongs to Reality Products EOOD.
Moreover, the survey concluded that both the river banks are polluted, vegetation is contaminated, and that waste water is poured directly into the river from the factory.
"The company has no permission whatsoever to dump its industrial waste in the river," continues the report.
The Regional Laboratory in Sofia then extracted a water sample from the river which was then ferried to the laboratories in the capital. The results from the analysis revealed "that acceptable norms of water pollution concentration have been grossly exceeded".
