Bicycles alleys are set to be installed along Tsarigradsko Chausse. This will require the construction of specially designated lanes meant for cyclists, and the plan is set to be approved by the Architectural Commission of the Sofia City Council on Wednesday, April 22, Gradski.bg has reported.

The alleys are meant to span the entire length of Tsarigradsko, the entire borough of Iztok, bordering with the Boris Gardens, and the area surrounding the park. They will reach as far as Eagles Bridge and the Sofia University.

An additional plan is for bicycle alleys to be installed along the length of Novachitsa river.

It's still unclear how exactly they will be installed along the major boulevard. Set to be one metre wide, they will either be segregated completely from the main traffic or separated by a bright red horizontal marking.

The only two-way bicycle alley installed in Sofia so far runs along the Perlovska Reka along the Evlogi Georgiev blvd. The oldest alley is along the King Boris III blvd that runs from Ruski Pametnik (Russian Cenotaph) all the way to Vitosha Mountain (which is currently under reconstruction), and there is also an alley along Bulgaria blvd.

Unlike Sofia, other major European capitals like Amsterdam, for example, spend as much as 20 million euro annually expanding and rejuvenating such installations. In Berlin, cyclists can enjoy more than 700 km of alleys.
