Generally, the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is perceived as a sleepy old institution where there is little room or understanding for anything that is slightly off the beaten path.

A new site, recently launched by the Bulgarian National Seismological Data Centre at the Geophysical Institute at BAS, looks set to at least make a dent in that reputation.

The site, still in beta according to Emil Botev, head of the Geophysical Institute, combines a Google map with a database of recent earthquakes.

At present, not all search and filter criteria have been activated and the site simply provides an overview of earthquake activity over the past seven days.

Granted, a simple search in the recently launched Wolfram Alpha search engine generates similar results, minus the ability to scroll the map and with fewer details of the Balkan region. For this, you'd have to do a separate search.

What is astonishing is the difference in data between the two searches. Wolram's single registered earthquake is a lot more comforting than the screen-full of blue dots that Geophysical Institute presents for the same period and region.

The question is, which one is more accurate?
