Environmentalist organisation Sustaining Nature in Bulgaria will organise a demonstration and hold a vigil in Sofia, aimed at preserving nature in the country, and, in particular, thwart contemplated new construction in mountain regions across the country, Dnevnik daily has reported.
The demonstration will commence at 5.30pm from the pylons of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) and it will end outside the Bulgarian Parliament building.
"In spite of strong support emanating from hundreds of thousands of Bulgarian citizens, intellectuals, artists, celebrities, and even some politicians, the Bulgarian institutions have failed to thwart investors interested in expanding their illegal construction into the mountains," a statement from Sustaining Nature in Bulgaria reads.
The organisation fears that with the arrival of the next Government on June 5, the systematic destruction of natural habitat and deforestation will continue.
The demonstration aims to get the Government to take particular measures against illegal lift facilities already constructed and currently operating in Panichishte and Kartala, in Rila, and to stop construction of the Riverside Village complex in Irakli. The proposed new ski zone in Vitosha mountain is also considered illegal and is the subject of fierce controversy.
