Net Prophet - A Nightmare on Friday the 13th

Sep 11 2003 15:00 CET by Dave Yasvinski

I've always been a big fan of horror films. Ever since I was little and somehow convinced my parents I wouldn't be frightened by a viewing of Poltergeist (which, of course, I was), they've had a hold on me.

SOME time last month I decided it was finally time to replace my computer. After three years, two continents, and countless hours of use, the old guy was starting to lag behind the times.

Net Prophet - Making sense of the world

Feb 06 2003 13:00 CET by Dave Yasvinski

WHEN I returned home to Canada after living abroad for a year and a half, I opened up my storage locker and reacquainted myself with my belongings - including my sadly outdated television. True, my television is at least 30 years old and was outdated by the time I was born, but it still made me reflect on how quickly things advance these days. My failure to keep up with these advancements will be saved for another column.

WHEN actress Kate Winslet appeared on the most recent cover of Britain's GQ magazine, she caused quite a stir. The reason? Winslet - normally considered curvaceous, and proud of it - now seemingly possesses the dimensions of a supermodel.

GROWING up, I always considered myself something of a Star Trek fan. But while I enjoyed watching the shows and discussing them with my friends, I was always wary of crossing the very blurry line between casual fan and hardcore addict. Fortunately, I had my aunt to keep me grounded.

Old tricks and new treats

MY fondest memory of Halloween occurred one chilly evening 13 or so years ago. Faced with the unjust realisation that my trick or treating days were well behind me, I knew there was one avenue which remained open - scaring the hell out of the neighbourhood kids.

MY time in university may have expanded my vocabulary, but it also taught me at least five synonyms for one cold, cruel word that many of us think about on a daily basis - Debt.

Bulgaria's people
Aug 29 2002 15:00 CET by Dave Yasvinski

The truth is out there. Hidden of course, but it's begging to be found. Powerful people in powerful places may prefer that some questions go unanswered, and some opinions remain unheard - but that doesn't mean they'll have their way.

All hot and bothered
Aug 29 2002 15:00 CET by Dave Yasvinski

ONE of the biggest downsides to the internet is its anonymous nature. Millions of users log on every day and interact with faceless strangers for endless reasons. Of course, given the content of some of these endless reasons, an anonymous nature is also one of the net's upsides.

One thing that's always puzzled me about the internet is the sheer number of bad web sites out there. For the length of time the technology has been around, it's mind-boggling how even some of the most technologically advanced companies fall short in this department.

Despite the name, this restaurant is much more than a simple cafe. Located outside the city centre, it's worth going a little out of your way to dine here, and judging by the amount of business the place does whenever I'm around, I'm not alone in this estimation.
