On Wednesday January 31, London Sofia Property - the developers of the forthcoming Bulgaria Mall - broke ground on their latest project, called Mount View. The complex is a luxurious, high-end residential development in the Vitosha foothills, near the road Simeonovsko Chausse. At a news conference Hugh Fraser, London Sofia Property's executive director, gave details about the 20 million euro development.

A MESSAGE and request for friendship is circulating throughout several Bulgarian cities. One foreigner has taken the search for friendship or love outside the conventional dating game and developed his own very personal and unique way to find that someone special.
Finding a prospective partner in life always has its challenges.

I always thought it an interesting concept to go to a restaurant named after the capital city of a country.
Does this mean I will be taken on a figurative journey to the country and be consumed with the best and worst of the destination through a culinary and cultural experience?

WHEN people want to eat out, it's not just for the food. For many, it's about getting together with friends in a great atmosphere, realising the imagination or experiencing something that you can't normally have.
Restaurant visiting is often more than the necessity of appeasing the hunger pangs.
BULGARIA is becoming a more popular tourist destination every year. During summer, the Black Sea offers great beaches, the countryside offers a wealth of history and the mountains offer challenging mountaineering and skiing, but one area of Bulgaria that has not been widely publicised is its skies.

GIVEN that he stands two metres tall, it would be easy to expect that 59-year-old Dutch national Roel Van De Waal is a formidable character.
On the contrary, Van De Waal has a genuinely gentle view of the world, with both feet firmly on the ground. He is exceptionally modest about his work achievements, especially when it comes to the subject of his role as resident twinning adviser for the EU Phare Twinning project on social security.

OUR Earth is an art gallery and nature never ceases to amaze. It is hard to capture the world's amazing beauty inside four walls, but the National Museum of Natural History has done quite a good job of it. This museum displays much of Bulgaria's raw and natural beauty along with numerous exotic and extraordinary treasures from far and wide.

A new French restaurant has come to town, offering fresh, luxurious seafood flown in daily direct from France; and what's special about this is that it doesn't have a luxurious price tag. Step in to La Commanderie and you will feel that you are in La Provence- the experience is truly French.
Francis Delamare is a former chef of famous Parisian restaurants La Tour D'Argent and Oscar Bellinger, to name a couple.

WHAT singles this club out from the rest is the very personal attention that the staff gives to its guests. There is no doubt that personal training gives huge amounts of benefits to an exercise regime. In almost all the clubs that I have visited around the world, personal training is an added service, which only comes on request, and has a price tag associated with it.

BOROVETS is home to the first and most famous Bulgarian mountain resorts. Only 73km, and less than 50 minutes away from Sofia, the village sits at an altitude of 1350 metres at the base of Mt Moussala (2925m), the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula.
Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting village for the Bulgarian kings, Borovets is now renowned for skiing and winter sports.

THE Crystal Palace is a stylish hotel situated on Shipka Street. Outside the hotel is the beautiful Doctors Garden park which, with its leafy trees, is a great place to hang out in summer with friends. The Crystal Palace Health Club has the same relaxed peaceful atmosphere all year round. The intimate private spa facility is one that feels more like the personal spa of the rich and famous than one of a hotel.

THE Hilton group of hotels has been synonymous with excellence in the hospitality industry. Its five-star rating demands fine quality and service. The newly erected hotel (2001) doesn't carry the architectural feel of Bulgaria. However the staff and management without question do; from the doorman to the management.
Five-star hotels are a rarity in Sofia, so it was with particular interest that I wanted to test the health facilities of the `newest' in town in five-star style.

IT is timely that with Bastille Day- the French national day- we introduce this week's expat of the week.
I sat down to talk to Olivier Roch at his restaurant L'etranger, where I felt like I was back in one of the chic-styled Parisian restaurants in France. I say chic-styled because part of the charm of the Parisian restaurants is that they are stylishly presented while also having the relaxed ambience of your own lounge.

MY expectation of a four-star hotel was to view and experience a four-star health club. At first sight the grand swimming pool caught my eye, a 20 metre, 26 degree Celsius swimming pool with fulltime lifeguard. The new pool is ideal for swimming training and it is mandatory to wear a swimming cap at all times. I was told that the hotel likes to encourage not only guests to use the facility, but also local Bulgarians to come along at the weekends.

Not unlike Paris, finding restaurants and bars in Sofia - especially when language is a barrier - is undoubtedly a challenging task. For the many of you who have lived here for some time you already know the good, the bad, and the ugly of places to eat or frequent. But for those who haven't been here long enough to salvage some local knowledge or had the possibility to exchange a host of tips with fellow expats...

HOT sex, hot bodies and hot weather seem to be all thought of in the same image. The hot weather has arrived in Bulgaria and if the other two haven't, then its time to take a look at what's on offer in Sofia.
The best place to be on a hot day is the beach on the Black Sea, but for some it is the worst place to be seen if one is still carrying the extra kilos of winter. The subject of what to do to get fit over summer has now become a regular topic over coffee or dinner with friends.

With Black Sabbath and its famous front man Ozzy Osborne hitting town next week, I wanted to take a look at the worldwide phenomenon of heavy metal and what heavy metal culture is in Bulgaria.
Knowing little about the heavy metal phenomenon - I have always been amazed that the reality television show The Osbornes had such a large following - I needed to know more.

THERE was another bout of international rugby in Sofia when, on May 15, Belgian side the Brussels Barbarians took on the local National Sports Academy Rugby Club (NSARC).
The wet Sunday afternoon match promised hot competition, with both sides prominent in their respective leagues.

I figured if Mel Gibson can hang tough with a 9mm Beretta, then so could I. He's Australian. I am a New Zealander. That's enough. It was time I learned about guns. The ones the big boys use.
After some research, I discovered that in 2004 Bulgaria was home to 269 registered gun shops and 67 shooting ranges, a staggering statistic considering there are only two in Manhattan. The biggest in Sofia is the VIP Arms and Shooting Complex.

FOR the first time, an International Rugby 15s tournament was held in Sofia, over the Orthodox Easter holidays, where five teams from the United Kingdom, Cyprus and Bulgaria fought it out to take the inaugural crown.
The teams were in two groups and played a "round-robin" type tournament with two 30-minute halves to determine the event champion.

IVAN, 39, is a well-dressed, war-scarred Bulgarian national who is no longer in the country.
He seldom smiles; he gave this interview because he wants to purge himself of his deep and dark secrets. Ivan is not his real name; he is being sought, he says, for war crimes against humanity. His dark brown eyes seem to reflect images of death; some of his secrets will be taken to his grave.
