A Bulgarian citizen has been arrested in Brindisi, Italy, for transporting 32 000 counterfeit brand metal buttons, worth 100 000 euro, ilRoma.net said. The goods were seized by Brindisi customs officials working together with the finance police when the ship was in the Costa Morena port, where it arrived from Greece.

French-Bulgarian initiative Bulga Risk, which would manage pilot-projects for prevention of natural disasters in 3 Bulgarian regions, would be operational in mid 2008, Mediaterre said. A prototype for a specific database would be made and training sessions for Bulgarian specialists on risk management would be held as part of the project. Evaluation maps of areas struck by disasters would be made by comparing satellite images of the areas before and after the disasters.

On December 21 2007, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia. Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia joined the Schengen Treaty. Four-hundred million citizens can freely travel the new 24 country area. According to Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivaylo Kalfin, Bulgaria and Romania could join Schengen in 2010 or 2011. "The realistic date for entering the Schengen Treaty zone is 2010 or 2011. But that depends on how prepared Romania will be, since it would be odd for Bulgaria to join, but to have a Schengen border with Romania," Kalfin said.
